The Stoughton Icebergs netted two goals in the third period to earn a 2-1 win over Fond du Lac in a season opener on Friday, Nov. 26, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.

The Icebergs couldn’t make it a 2-0 start as the Stoughton co-op fell to the Fox Cities Stars 6-4 on Saturday, Nov. 27, back at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

Stoughton 2, Fond du Lac 1

After a scoreless first period, the Warbirds took a 1-0 late in the second period when Emily Brown found the back of the net. The Icebergs equalized 3 minutes, 26 seconds into the third period when defender Abby Hinrichs (McFarland) scored on a power play. Less than three minutes later, forward Laila Howe (Monona Grove) found forward Addy Milota (Stoughton) on a goal to give Stoughton a 2-1 advantage.

Goalie Aven Gruner (Stoughton) stopped 20 of 21 shots in goal for the Icebergs, good for a .952 save percentage.

Fox Cities 6, Stoughton 4

After a goal from Fox Cities in the first period, the second period featured seven scores between the two teams.

The Stars went up 2-0 just over three minutes into the second, but the Icebergs equalized within the next three minutes from scores from defender Avery Gerothanas (Monona Grove) and Milota. Gerothanas’ goal was a power-play score assisted by forward Samantha Nelson (Stoughton) and forward Carley O’Neil (Stoughton).

Fox Cities scored the next two goals to take back its two-score lead. Milota cut the deficit down to 4-3 with an even-strength goal 12:02 into the second.

The Stars’ McKayla Zilisch capped the high-scoring second with a goal 14:01 into the period. Howe made it a one-score game 15:23 into the third period, but a Fox Cities’ goal less than a minute later made it 6-4.

Fox Cities outshot Stoughton 46-17.

Goalie Jordyn Godfrey (Monona Grove) collected 41 saves for Stoughton.
