Ty Fernholz scored six points the final two minutes and finished with a game-high 37 points to lead the Stoughton boys basketball team to a 64-62 Badger Conference win over Monona Grove on Thursday, Jan. 6, at Monona Grove High School.

The tables were turned for the Vikings (5-5, 3-3 Badger Conference) as Stoughton fell to Onalaska 64-62 in a nonconference game on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Stoughton High School.

Stoughton 64, Monona Grove 62

The Vikings were down 60-58 with under two minutes to go before Fernholz made a pair of free throws to tie the game. Stoughton forced a turnover and Fernholz hit a turnaround jumper to put the Vikings up 62-60. Fernholz made another pair of free throws late and Monona Grove — down 64-62 — had a late desperation heave that wasn’t close.

Fernholz’s 37 was a career high. He was coming off a 35-point performance against Lodi on Jan. 23. Fernholz also added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Senior guard Jayden Zywicki added 15 points in the victory for Stoughton.

Onalaska 64, Stoughton 62

Stoughton was tied with Onalaska 27-27 at halftime, but the Vikings were narrowly outscored 37-35 in the second half. Fernholz finished with a team-high 21 points. Zywicki added 18 points in the defeat. Senior guard Luke Fernholz finished with 11 points for Stoughton.
