Nicolar Rivera beat the country’s No. 1-ranked wrestler on his way to winning a Cheesehead Invitational championship last week for the Stoughton wrestling team. The senior defeated Southeast Polk (Iowa) junior Nate Jesuroga — the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country in his weight class — 10-6 in the 126 pound final. For his performance, Rivera has earned Athlete of the Week honors.
Highlight match: Rivera moved to 29-0 on the season after taking down the nation’s No. 1-ranked wrestler. Rivera also was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Cheesehead Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Kaukauna High School.
Coach’s quote: “Being voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament is something that is not easy to do,” Stoughton co-coach Dan Spilde said. “We’ve been going to that tournament for I believe 22 years and we’ve had guys come out of that tournament with wins. But if I remember right, we’ve never had an Outstanding Wrestler at that tournament.”
